Vaccination for Study Abroad or Travel

Vaccines in Hong Kong should be carefully administered two weeks to one month prior to your departure if you are traveling to foreign countries or studying abroad. Before departing Hong Kong, please ensure that relevant arrangements regarding boarding, guarantee and testing are undertaken. 

 

Boostrix-IPV Vaccine

This vaccine is used as a booster to prevent four diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough) and poliomyelitis (polio). Symptoms of the diseases include nerve damage, heart problems, muscle stiffness, painful muscle spasms, long-lasting bronchitis and pneumonia.


Recommended for: Aged 4 years and older

MMR Vaccine

The vaccine is used to protect against measles, mumps, and rubella viruses that may cause fever, rash, cough, runny nose, swollen salivary glands. Complications can include swelling of the testicles or ovaries, deafness, inflammation of the brain and/or tissue covering the brain and spinal cord (encephalitis/meningitis).


Recommended for: Aged 1 year old and older

Chicken Pox Vaccine

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It causes an itchy, blister-like rash. The rash appears first on the chest, back, and face, and then spreads over the entire body.

Prevenar 13 Vaccine

Prevenar 13 is used to protect against invasive disease, pneumonia (infection of the lungs) and acute otitis media (infection of the middle ear) caused by S. pneumoniae.


Recommended for: Children aged between six weeks and 17 years; elderly above 65 years old

Hepatitis A Vaccine

Hepatitis A is a serious liver disease. A person infected with hepatitis A can transmit the disease to other people even if he or she does not have any symptoms of the disease.


Recommended for: 2 to 18 years old (Child vaccine); 19 years old or above

Hepatitis B Vaccine

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the liver and can cause both acute and chronic disease. It can become a long-term, chronic infection that can lead to serious, even life-threatening health issues like cirrhosis or liver cancer.


Recommended for: 0-15 years old (Child vaccine); 16 years old or above

Hepatitis A & B Twinrix Vaccine

This vaccine is to prevent both Hepatitis A and B.

Nimenrix Vaccine

Nimenrix is a vaccine used to protect against invasive meningococcal disease caused by four groups of the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis (group A, C, W-135, and Y).


Recommended for: From the age of 6 weeks

Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine

Japanese encephalitis vaccination is safe and effective in preventing the disease. Most infections occur without apparent symptoms or with mild symptoms such as fever and headache. More severe infection is characterised by rapid onset of headache, high fever, neck stiffness, impaired mental state, coma, tremors, convulsions (especially in children) and paralysis.


Recommended for: For travellers who plan to stay one month or longer in endemic areas, particularly in rural areas; and for short-term (less than one month) travellers if they plan to have significant extensive outdoor or night-time exposure in rural areas during the transmission season of the disease.

Hepatitis A + Typhoid Vaccine

Combined typhoid and hepatitis A injections are also available for people aged 15 or over. Protection against hepatitis A lasts 1 year and protection against typhoid lasts 3 years.

Typhoid Fever Vaccine

Typhoid fever can be a life-threatening disease.  Symptoms of infection include persistent high fever, weakness, stomach pain, headache, diarrhea or constipation, cough, and loss of appetite.


Recommended for: Aged 2 and above

Rabies Vaccine (Verorab)

Rabies is mainly a disease of animals. Humans get rabies when they are bitten or scratched by infected animals. Signs and symptoms may include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, agitation, anxiety, confusion, hyperactivity, insomnia and partial paralysis.


Recommended for: Adults and children living in or travelling to enzootic areas
